How it Works
Heat Pump water heaters transfer heat from the surrounding air to the water in the tank, using less electricity compared to traditional electric water heaters.
Tankless water heaters heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit, and either a gas burner or an electric element heats the water.
A tank water heater keeps water warm all the time in a big tank. When you need hot water, like for a bath or washing dishes, it comes from this tank. It uses either gas or electric power to keep the water ready whenever you turn on the hot tap.
Energy
Efficiency
Heat Pump water heaters are the most energy efficient. They use electricity to move heat from the air or ground into the water, instead of directly heating the water, which save more energy.

3.0 - 4.1 UEF (Uniform Energy Factor)
Tankless water heaters are the most water efficient, in that they heat water at the time of use.

0.85 - 0.97 UEF (Uniform Energy Factor)
Tank water heaters are less efficient because they continuously heat water to maintain a set temperature. This constant reheating of water, even when hot water is not being used, results in higher energy consumption.

0.54 - 0.64 UEF (Uniform Energy Factor)
Energy Savings
$270-$550* annual energy cost savings.

*Annual savings estimate by EnergyStar
$95-$110* annual energy cost savings.

*Annual savings estimated by EnergyStar
This is the conventional standard so there are not savings associated with tank water heaters.
Performance
Heat pump water heaters store hot water and can run out if used heavily, versus heating water on demand like a tankless water heater. It is important that your unit is sized appropriately for your home to ensure you have ample hot water.
Tankless units heat water on demand which ensures that you always have a consistent supply of hot water.
Typically, they have a lower upfront cost but may be less energy-efficient compared to tankless or heat pump models, leading to potentially higher operational costs over time due to standby heat loss.

Space Needs
Floor Standing - Require specific considerations due to their operation method. They are usually installed in spaces measuring 700 cubic feet or more to ensure adequate ventilation, as these units need air exchange to function efficiently. This translates to a room size of about 7’ x 10’ x 10’.
Wall Mounted - Exact space needed will depend on the unit's size and the installation specifics, such as venting requirements and accessibility for maintenance.
Floor Standing - Requires adequate space around the unit for proper installation and ventilation. Generally we recommend that these units have at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides. This space allows for proper air circulation and accessibility for maintenance.
